Week 1 (23/8/2021)

The Bezier Game

Today is my first lesson for DPI class which is also my first class for degree. Mr Martin started off with the introduction this module and the module structure for us to have a better understanding of this module He then proceeded to show us some students previous works, that helped me know what I should be providing and showing for our final outcome. Soon after that he told us that we are going to play a game and this game is called "The Bezier Game" it is a game that teaches and let us practice more on the pen tool.

After playing with "The Bezier Game" for a couple of hours I finally got the hang of it. When I first started it was really confusing for me and I had to kept on retrying, I struggled the most with the curved areas. I found that the ALT shortcut is really useful as we can bend the line and direct it to somewhere else which will be the next starting point of the curves or lines. Overall I am pretty satisfied with what I did and I hope I can improved on it further by using lesser nodes.

3 Favorite Graphic Design Work from Pinterest

For our second task we were required to find 3 of our favorite graphic design works from Pinterest.

FIRST WORK :

Fig. 2.1 Poster 1

Poster by Owen M. Roe

What I like about this poster is that the colours are really eye catching and mesmerizing, it feels like it is dragging me into the drawing and teleport me to a different dimension filled with agony and pain. Everything about this poster is like a fever dream where the world is about to end. The alignment of words and picture is perfect and neat which does not make the poster look too messy. The font choice is interesting as the main subject is bold with Japanese calligraphy over it in red that blends with the background.

SECOND WORK :

Fig. 2.2 Poster 2

Poster by Yung Lean

This piece gives off a nostalgic vibe with wash off colours and an old laundromat as the background. The grain texture provides a paper like feeling to it. I personally loved how this was incorporated with a photo and handwritten words. The handwritten words show that this has a personal meaning to it and is one of a kind. The two figure drawings look like imaginary friends that the creator tried to bring to life. Words on the side creates a border which keeps the poster neat. Monochrome background and red scribbles really contrast each other.

THIRD WORK :

Fig. 2.3 Poster 3

by joe fang, FK WU, COMPUTERFACE Itd.

This graphic design was created by multiple artists. What I like about this work is the usage of colours and patterns. It might have a lot of colours going on but I think that it complements each other really well with the cyan, violet, magenta tones and a black background to let the main subject pop. I also really like how they remove the top part of the human body and replace it with this unknown creature which looks like sea anemone, it looks like a parasite which is taking over the human body and becoming the host instead. Other than that, the border created some space between the words and makes everything looks balanced. The fonts are also really well used, the bold font and pixelated Chinese characters gives off a cyberpunk theme to it.

Week 4 (13/9/2021)
Adjustment Layers and Filters

Fig. 3.1  Adjustment Layers and Filters Final Outcome

Since the original digital collage had a brighter background and elements that are cool and chill, I decided to give the edited one a cyberpunk neon tone to it. First, I used the colour fill and filled the layer with the colour green and proceeded to use the blending mode and changed it to luminosity it gave the elements like the train and buildings this neon colour look but I decided to use the pen tool to mask out the buildings as I wanted another colour to contrast it. After that, I filled the second layer with red and used the blending mode and put hard mix on. It gave the buildings this bloodshot red colour like it is out of a comic book. I also use the pen tool to mask out the background and train. I then increased the brightness and contrast of the collage so that the colour would pop and look more neon. Other than that, I also adjusted curves, exposure, vibrance, and hue/ saturation for it.

Week 5 (20/9/2021)

Part 1: Hearst Mansion and Shazam

Mr. Martin has tasked us to do exposure editing with the two images given, Hearst Mansion and a Shazam poster. We are required to mask the full body self-portrait of Shazam and paste it into the Hearst Mansion. After that, adjust the Shazam image to suit the background given. Mr. Martin has provided us with a YouTube tutorial video on how top do it.

Fig. 7.1 Composition given

Fig. 7.2 Keyframe in After Effects

For the shark I wanted to make it look like it is swimming while I wanted to make the fencer look like their actually fencing. I made the typewriter go up and down and slowly fading each time it goes down. After I was does with the keyframe I exported the file and publish it on YouTube.

REFLECTION

Overall I found that doing each and every one of this exercise had helped me learned more about the software that we were tasked to use for our projects. The exercises has created a base for me which made using the software much more easier to understand than before.
