Project 2: Final Dissertation with Visual Design

INSTRUCTION

Project 2
For this project, we were tasked to design the publication of the dissertation. The concept of the publication has to be relevant to our research topic. Below is the moodboard for the visual design. I did not follow it fully for the final visual design as there were changes and adjustments that needed to be made along the way.

Other than that, we also had to finalize our dissertation for our Turnitin submission.

FEEDBACK

Week  9 -
General Feedback:
Be careful of copyright issues with images, if you need to use copyrighted images remember to credit the source in the picture credits. In the 2nd page of the book after the cover page, put only the title. Try to change the design of the tables and charts to match the style of the dissertation design.

Personal Feedback:
Maybe incorporate some Japanese anime typefaces in the page number or layout of the dissertation. The typefaces have a more western look to it. Despite it being educational work, make sure the images used are recognised, put them in the picture credits. Be careful of the curve at the work “the” at the cover page, look at the kerning of the words, play around with the leading and alignment with the title. Add your name into the cover page as well. For layout try to look at more Japanese-inspired layout.

Week  10 -
Change the green to something else like kenkhis green, dont use bold lines it's very blocky, make changes in the second page with the title to match the changes that was made in the cover page, the copyright page can be put after the second title page. Remember to put the Taylor’s logo, but don't make it too big.

Week  11 -
Pay attention to British and American English when writing, be consistent and pick one. Add roman page number in the front pages. Put a conclusion in the last sentence of the abstract. In section 1.5 remove the word diagram so that it would be more fluid. Consider a summary conclusion up to section 5. In section 3.1 write down the pros and cons in either a table format or with citations. Write something in 4.0 that will relate back to section 3. Look at the grammar mistake in 3.1.2. Remove the initials for Ito and Bisila use the names only since initials only appear in references and not in the in-text citations. In sections 4.1.3 and 4.1.4 describe the analysis more clearly and reflect on the respondents understanding, double check on the percentages as the one in the table and in the paragraph are not the same, write a summary conclusion for it as well. In section 3 change research method to research methodology, in section 4 change research findings to research findings and analysis and in section 7 change it to future research project design recommendation. In section 5 discussion, write that the secondary data had been taken from section 2 of the literature review, a bit more citations needs to be use. Draw a conclusion summary, indicate where the data is from and describe that it is relate to section 4 and 5. In section 6, refer the summary conclusion of all the sections and write it in the conclusion.

REFLECTION

Week  8 -
I started project 2 this week, I was slightly relief as there was no more writing involved anymore or I will feel like my head will be exploding anytime soon. I looked at multiple references on Pinterest to create my moodboard, I tried finding references that involves, anime, manga, Japanese magazines, old Japanese newspapers and so on since I wanted to have a Japanese feel to the design. I found it really fun to design the cover page, but the layout was tough.

Week  9 -
I continued the design layout while making changes according to the feedback that I have gotten.

Week  10 -
This week, I managed to finalize the overall design for all the sections. It took me a while to come up with the ideas as some of the previous designs turned out tacky and cheap looking.

Week  11 -
We had to make changes to our final dissertation this week, I was a bit confused why we did not do it earlier since our visual design was already pretty much done. Having to add or take things out from the final dissertation made it feel like I had to do double the work because I had to update the visual design according to the changes made.

Week  12 -
This week, I finalize my dissertation and the visual design. Then I spend hours just double-checking the visual design in case I made minor mistakes. After that, I submitted the visual design to google classroom.

Overall -
This project was fun, the design part not the writing, but it was also time-consuming having to adjust the layout for over 100 pages and to make it consistent while having to come up with interesting ideas to not make the layout look bland. But that is part of designing and I do not mind it.  Being able to create illustrations that are related to my topic which was anime was exciting.
