Week 1- Introduction to Information Design
During our first lecture, Ms. Anis started off by introducing us to the module. She went through the module information brief, task, assignments as well as group projects. After that, we proceeded with our first exercise which is quantify and visualize data. Since we are still in hybrid learning, the people at campus are able to use materials and objects provided by Ms. Anis to arrange the objects into a presentable layout or chart, and take a picture for submission. While those at home can take what they have and do the same, for those who are not able to search for the multiple quantity of the same item they are able to go with option two which is the emergency bug out bag. Where you have to search and layout objects in your household that you will bring along with you in case of a variety of emergency scenarios.
INSTRUCTIONS
Exercise 1: Quantify Data
Fig. 1.1 Glass jar of paper stars (4/1/2022)
Since I was not able to be present in campus I had to go all over my house searching for the objects that is suitable. I ended up finding a glass jar filled with paper stars on my sister's shelves.
Fig. 1.2 Pile of paper stars (4/1/2022)
I then proceeded to pour all of them on my working table to look thoroughly at what I am going to work with.
Fig. 1.3 Paper stars that are chosen (5/1/2022)
There was multiple patterns and colours to choose from. From neon, hello kitty, gold words, metallic with texture and metallic without texture, etc. My favorite out of them all was the metallic one with texture. As this glass jar of paper stars had been on my sister's shelves for the longest that I could remember some colours were worn out and bend. So I separated the metallic one with texture out from the pile and took out the defective ones.
Fig. 1.4 Assorting the paper stars in colours (5/1/2022)
I sorted them out by colour, blue, silver, red, green, pink and gold.
Fig. 1.5 Assorting the paper stars in colours (5/1/2022)
After sorting them out by colour I started writing down information on the numbers of paper stars there are according to their colour and total it off.
Fig. 1.6 First layout (9/1/2022)
For my first attempt I wanted to create a bar chart style layout but it looked a but plain and uncreative.
Final Layout
Fig. 1.7 Final layout (12/1/2022)
For my final layout I wanted a theme like stars in the sky so I placed the paper stars according to how I wanted it to be arranged and sketched out the clouds with a pencil first so that the size of the clouds will be perfect to fit all the paper stars into. After that I took out the paper stars and sketched out small clouds beside the big ones to fill in the information that I have gathered which is blue: 8, silver 11, pink 8, Red: 11, Gold: 14 and green: 9. So with all the amount of the stars I have separated and gathered IFor total up the amount to 61 and stated out the name of the item which is "paper stars" in the middle of the layout. Once I was done with that I took different coloured markers and did the line art and decorated it with multi coloured sparkles.
Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H
Organize a group of information into a visual poster that combined and utilizes the LATCH principles (min.4)
- Size resolution : 1240 x 1750 pixels or 2048 x 2048 pixels
- Digital photo editing/ illustration software available to assemble the Pokémon into a LATCH infographic poster.
- We can re-use back the images of the monsters, but do create the rest of our own visuals to complete the poster.
As I do not play any Pokémon games whatsoever and only watched a few episodes of the series before my knowledge on Pokémon is pretty bad. So I spend my entire day just looking at the examples that Ms. Anis gave and also went onto Pinterest to look at map ideas.
Fig. 2.1 Inspiration (14/1/2022)
I found this example that Ms. Anis gave really nice, from the colour, map illustration and layout all really fit well with me.
Fig. 2.2 Map idea (14/1/2022)
I found this map while searching on Pokémon maps to get more ideas and I like the angle of how the globe can be seen in a fisheye view.
Fig. 2.3 Map idea 2 (14/1/2022)
I loved this map design that I found on Pinterest. As it shows different regions, weather conditions and so on which is really interesting and fun. So I decided to use the idea of having an island and separate it into a few parts to suit the weather and location for the different type of Pokémon that I chose.

For the icons I decided to download them in the link above and paste them in illustrator.
Right after that I took two whole days to come up with the decision of which Pokémon I wanted to go with. Since the list was very long, I set some rules for myself and tried to stick with Pokémon with only one type so I went with a bug, electric, ghost and psychics type Pokémon which can be seen below with the location idea that I came up with.
Fig. 2.5 Bug type Pokémon (16/1/2022)
Location Idea: Forest
Fig. 2.6 Electric type Pokémon (16/1/2022)
Location Idea: Electro infected lake
Fig. 2.7 Ghost type Pokémon (16/1/2022)
Location Idea: Rocky mountains with thick fog
Fig. 2.8 Physics type Pokémon (16/1/2022)
Location Idea: Research lab
Fig. 2.9 Pokémon logo (16/1/2022)
I also downloaded the Pokémon logo to put it in my infographic.
Sketches
Fig. 2.10 First sketch (18/1/2022)
For my first sketch I initially had 5 types of Pokémon and it felt way too cramp and all over the place. It also lack some information like the title and the type information.
Fig. 2.11 Second sketch (19/1/2022)
In my second sketch I minus one Pokémon and only left with 4. I also decreased one location since one Pokémon is out. I rearranged the boxes and added a types category and the Pokémon title.
Fig. 2.12 Progress (20/1/2022)
Since I was a bit unsure of my progress I decided to ask Ms. Anis for a feedback on my poster. Where I said that I'll be rearranging the types to alphabetical order and also adding buildings on the small purple island to create a research lab. Ms. Anis said that the infographic was looking good and I should also add the Pokémon names as well as their national number.
Fig. 2.13 Making changes and adding new things (21/1/2022)
After the feedback I got from Ms. Anis I added the names of the Pokémon and their national number. Arrows are also added to show the evolution of the Pokémon. I also added clouds on the mountain island and used gaussian blur on it to create a thick fog effect. The buildings on the purple island was also created. I changed the arrangement of the types to alphabetical order. Changed the background colour to make it look more contrast with the other elements. I also switched the layout of the Pokémon, clouds and logo.
The L.A.T.C.H that is included in this infographics are:
Location: The different areas made for the different kinds of Pokémon
Alphabet: The types are arranged in alphabetical order
Time: N/A
Category: The different types of Pokémon placed in different categories
Hierarchy: The hierarchy of evolution in the Pokémon

FEEDBACK
Week 3- Exercise 2 (21/1/2022)
Looking good, add their names and national numbers.
REFLECTION
The quantifying data was something different from what we usually do in my degree experience. It has been quite some time since I did any physical work most of the time I just stare at my screen and feel like my eyeballs are falling off at a point and my neck feels like it aged 50 years. At first I though this exercise would be a scary one since I'm not a fan of math or anything related to numbers it just makes my brain stop. After actually doing it I found it fun being able to organized the paper stars that I forgot that my sister had and get information from them. Who would have thought those paper stars would have any other purpose in life other than just sitting on the shelf collecting dust. I was also able to be creative doing the layout for the final work.
For exercise 2 L.A.T.C.H, it was pretty cool being able to create a landscape to sort out the Pokémon's to. I was a bit frustrated when picking which Pokémon I wanted to include because most of them are so cool. Illustrator is not my strong point either so that was certainly a challenge for me to do but after a few YouTube tutorials nothing is impossible. I found the L.A.T.C.H method helpful throughout the process of creating the infographic as it acts as a guide for me. I also had to be cautious about the size and layout of the overall work as if a certain thing is too small it might be too hard to read. Picking out colours is also something important as dull colours will make people loose interest and not want to read it.
