LECTURES

WEEK 3 :Film Sound

Sound elements
The mixing of sound elements below creates an audio setting that supports the action and engages the spectators.
  • Speech
  • Sound effects
  • Music
Speech
Speech is one of the most important tools for understanding the story of the film.
  • Dialogue: Conversation between characters in movie.
  • Voice over: The voice of an unseen narrator speaking

Sound effects
  • Ambience- Audio refers to the background noise present at a given scene or a location.
  • Hard or "cut" effects- Almost every sound we hear at the movies that is not a dialogue or music is a sound effect.

Music
Music in movie is to enhance the dramatic narrative and the emotional impact.

Dubbing
Dubbing or automated dialog replacement (ADR), is the process of re-recording after the filming process to improve audio quality or reflect dialogue changes

Foley
A sound effects technique for synchronous effects or live effects.

Act 3: End / Resolution
  • Ending of climax - Avner leaves the service.
  • Answer to all obstacles / problems Tying the loose ends

INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1 Exercise 1: Audio dubbing
For week 3 we had to do voice over and add sound effects for a Disney animated film "Soul". Sync the required audios in Premiere Pro (Speech and sound effects only, no music)

We were given a script of what we needed to add in the audio dubbing.

Fig. 1.1 Script (15/4/2022)

Before starting, I used https://freesound.org/https://99sounds.org/ to download the sound effects. I had two meow sound effect because the first meow was not good.

I recorded my dubbing in the app "Recorder" in my phone. There are two versions of some of the dubbing because I was not sure which one was good enough.

After that I combined all the audios in Premiere Pro. I tweak some of the sounds to make them softer like background sounds or sounds from really far away. Some parts the meow is softer to make it look like the cat is walking further or when the mood gets sadder then audio also gets softer.

After receiving feedback from Mr. Martin on week 7 I added the leaves falling ambiance in the background and  due to being incredibly busy with other assignments I was only able to upload it to YouTube on week 13 :')

Project 1 Exercise 2:
For exercise 2 we were tasked to use the provided audio to edit it into these sound effects:
  • Voice of phone call
  • Voice coming from inside of closet
  • Voice of big stadium
  • Voice of toilet/bathroom
  • Underground cave
Mr. Martin provided us a tutorial video on Adobe Audition to edit the sounds.

For the phone call audio, I did it based on the tutorial Mr. Martin gave and did a few adjustments on it.

As for the closet sound effect I also did it based on Mr. Martin's  tutorial on the muffled sound effects but move the treble in a bit more to give it a more confined space sound.

Fig. 2.2  Closet (8/5/2022)

I used reverb for the stadium sound to give it more echo effect.

Fig. 2.3  Stadium (8/5/2022)

Then for the toilet I also used the reverb and make the sound to sound like it is in a small close and empty confine space so that the sound sounds a bit more louder but not much echo as the space is small.

Fig. 2.4  Toilet (8/5/2022)

I used both the reverb and  parametric equalizer for the cave sound effect. As the cave is big the echo should sound longer and louder and at the same time the sound should be more confine.

Project 1 Exercise 3:
In exercise 3 we were tasked to use the audio clips provided and edit them based on these sounds:
1. Magnification explosion sound
2. Variation of punch sounds (Triple punches)
3. Monster of alien voice (select one part from sample voice)

Fig. 3.1  Audio Clips (28/6/2022)

For the explosion sound, I did multiple tracks by using stretch and pitch, and pitch shifter. After doing 4 tracks I layered the tracks and adjusted the sound with volume mixer.

As for the tripe punch I used parametric equalizer to edit two tracks to create different tones of punching sounds and then layered them together.

For the monster of alien voice, I cut out one part of the track and then edit it in stretch and pitch.

FEEDBACK

Week 7 (13/5/2022)- The music video is nice great acting, the low wide-angle and upper wider angle is not there but it's okay you do not have to change anything. The voice-over needs to add ambiance to it and leaves falling sounds.

REFLECTIONS
In this project, I learned how to use Adobe Audition to edit effects onto sounds I find it very interesting to be able to manipulate sound just by clicking a few settings. Other than that, I was incredibly excited to do the audio dubbing because I have always wished to do it. It was quite exhausting to be honest because I have to rerecord certain sounds to match the voice I did for certain parts. But in the end, I had fun!
