Exercises: Fundamentals
INSTRUCTION
Tasks
Week 1 - Draw thumbnail sketches for perspective, find
alleyways, landscapes, mountains, and skies, 4 per
sheet, 16:9 in a sheet, 1920x1080, resolution 72,
final resolution 140-300, and collect some photos
for inspiration. 3-4 drawings for each perspective 1
point, 2 points, 3 points and 4 points. Understand
the composition shape of the windows or doors, but
no detail like trees or other complicated stuff,
will be looking at the lines and the form. Floating
buildings will have 4 vanishing points.
Week 2
- Reference different temples and sketch out 6
temples from different perspective. Also, do not use
any real religion when it comes to anything, create
a fake fantasy one, and do not touch on a sensitive
topic. Remember when drawing an environment draw a
human/ animal for the scale.
Week 3 -
For the temple sketch:
1. Come up with a map by using the rules of third to
get an idea of the space
2. Foreground, ground, and background, separate them to
understand the blockout of the drawings
3. Draw a square before drawing the building, do
composition
4. Things to do is, rules of third, breakdown and
composition

Week 1-
Perspective Studies (Landscape)
We were tasked to find high-resolution landscape images (16:9, 1080 x 1920), and then we have to identify the perspective by drawing out the 1-point perspective/ 2-point perspective/ 3-point perspective with vanishing points. Then reconstruct the image by doing a simple line art of it.

Value Painting Studies (Landscape)
These were the value painting studies I did for digital matte painting exercise.

Temple Sketches
We were told to come up with 6 different perspective sketches for a temple. I struggled a lot the trees looked horrendous.

Week 3-
Temple Sketch Updates
After receiving some feedback from Mr. Kannan, I then refined my sketches and fixed the perspective for a few of them. I also made the sketch much cleaner this time.
Temple Sketches Ambience and Extractions - Week 4
I added blue ambience on top of the sketches and did a few extractions for the props and details.

FEEDBACK
Week 2 (13/4/2023)
Temple sketch is fine, try not to add too many things as it will be
messy, simplify it into shapes and add a few lines. Now use this idea and
sketch it in other perspectives.
Week 3 (20/4/2023)
Waterfall: For a start, it's fine, do a silhouette of a character
do not draw a stickman it looks kiddish. The waterfall has an edge, it
falls in a very sharp manner. End of the day it's about the quality. There
is no harm in making it simple, but you can exaggerate it. give it some
shape. When drawing shapes, make it big medium and small. Overlap it, if
you want to push it further, focus on the structural design.

Gate: This is a common shot, it's cool. You can start off
with this. You can try opening up the top to make it look like a crate.
Maybe create a rock wall surrounding it first before adding the trees.
You could add a statue on the left. You could also look up China Buddha
statue for inspiration, to look at how nature has taken over, with human
architecture and carvings. Add two more gates beside to exaggerate it,
and extend it. The back temple make it a silhouette do not have to
be so detailed, can cover it with fog.
Fig. 1.2 Temple gate feedback
Bridge: For the brick walls, just draw a few blocks one
big, medium and small, It would look cleaner and nicer. Try to overlap
certain elements to exaggerate the shapes.
REFLECTION
I have never ever drew a proper environment in my entire life. I'm the kind of person who would draw a character and slap a solid background and call it a day. I was terrified. I struggled a lot with perspective, well I saw that coming because I also struggled with it during vehicle design. My favorite part was the extractions of the props and details.
